Title: G2 Tobacco Prevention and Intervention Teacher Training Grant

Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the submission of the Tobacco Prevention and Intervention Teacher Training Project Competitive Grant to the Florida Department of Education for $50,000, effective July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities.

Description:

·        The goal of this grant is to provide teacher training in Tobacco Use Prevention and Intervention in order to reduce tobacco use in the school district.

·        Funds will be used to purchase the unitedstreaming.com video-on-demand website licensing for all schools. The website license allows the schools to access Sunshine State Standards' aligned videos and video clips about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) prevention; violence prevention and conflict resolution; character education; Science; Language Arts; Social Studies; Health; Foreign Languages; Math; vocational education; parenting skills and family life; safety; and staff development.

·        Research on unitedstreaming.com indicates that its use increases student achievement within the grade level and content areas examined. Two recent scientific evaluations showed significant improvement in 6th and 8th grade math and 3rd and 8th grade science and social studies test results. The technology is utilized in over one third of the school districts in the country.

·        Usage reports indicate that there have been over 345 tobacco videos or clips and lessons viewed in the schools this year. There have been over 59,000 videos or clips and lessons viewed in all content areas.

·        Staff training will be developed on a DVD for every school that will demonstrate use of the site and tobacco prevention videos and lessons.

·        The impact of this project will be measured by the reduction in tobacco incidents.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds budget is an increase of $50,000. All grant-related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue.
