Title: PM1 Project Modifications for Bak Middle School of the Arts

Recommendation:

I recommend the School Board approve Project Modifications in the amount of $342,537.50, for Bak Middle School of the Arts, Auditorium Project, and authorize the Chairman and Superintendent to execute all related contract documents.

Description:

Bak Middle School of the Arts – Auditorium Project #2511-8272

This project modification contains the following item:

• Additional Architectural Services in the amount of $17,537.50.
• Description:  Design modifications to the auditorium lobby to accommodate art gallery space.  Design change requires design revisions to the buildings structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well as changes to the civil drawings.
• Cause:  Outside Agency
• Justification:   The educational specifications did not include adequate space for an art gallery; therefore this change is being made to avoid taking away much need classroom space.  The need for additional space was identified by the school prior the start of construction of the auditorium.  This was deeded the most cost effective way to add the required gallery space.  Similar gallery space exists at A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, and staff would recommend including similar gallery space in any future secondary school that is designated as a "school of the arts".
• Construction Costs are estimated to be $325,000.00.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the Project's Budget is $342,537.50. The Foundation for the Bak Middle School of the Arts is contributing $100,000.00; therefore, the net cost is $242,573.50.

The source of funds is the project budget as approved by the Board at the time of the Construction Contract Award.
