New Business - Curriculum/Learning Support

Title: (A) - Field Trip Request - Gold Coast School of Choice

Description:

A group of 20 students will be chaperoned by 6 school board employees and 1 parent.  The group will depart form Palm Beach County to Miami International Airport on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 and will return on Thursday, June 9, 2005.

The trip is for students who have made a significant turn around and/or excelled academically.  Africa has been a part of our Social Studies Curriculum and this trip will go hand-in-hand with the real life experiences.

The cost of the trip is $2881 per student and $3156 per adult.  A fundraiser, donations and internal accounts will fund the trip for the students. Three school district chaperones' travel expense will be funded through budget and the remaining will pay their own way.

The benefits to the district include:

Ø       Broaden Student/teacher cultural, geological awareness.

Ø       Aspire an appreciation for other cultures.

First-hand experience in a variety of geological and cultural settings.

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve an educational trip for Gold Coast School of Choice students to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, June 1-9,2005 to study and experience the culture and to observe geological features of the country.

Financial Impact:

Cost to the District is $9468.00 from Gold Coast's budget travel fund and $57,620.00 from internal funds.
