School Board of Palm Beach County

NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULE ADOPTION & PUBLIC HEARING

RULE TITLE: Pediculosis (Head Lice) Prevention and Control.

RULE NUMBER: Policy 5.325.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: To codify a Policy, superseding Directive 5.102, concerning the prevention, identification, and control of incidents of head lice in the schools.

SUMMARY: This Policy would provide that the heads of individual students suspected of having pediculosis (head lice) will be screened by the principals’ designees with assistance from the School Health Program; however, screening entire classes is not in the best interest of the educational process. A student with an identified infestation of lice or nits would be excluded from school, as soon as is practically possible or at the end of the school day, to obtain treatment (and will be allowed to return when free of lice). However, students shall not be prevented from participating in the continuation of their education solely on the basis of a diagnosis of pediculosis.

SPECIFIC RULEMAKING AUTHORITY: Fla. Stat. §§ 1001.41(1) & (2); 1001.42 (22); 1006.07; 1006.062.

LAWS IMPLEMENTED: Fla. Stat. §§ 1004.41(6)(a); 1003.22; 1006.07; 1006.62.

SUMMARY OF STATEMENT OF ESTIMATED REGULATORY COST (optional, if one has been prepared): None prepared. Any person who wishes to provide information regarding a statement of estimated regulatory costs, or to provide a proposal for a lower cost regulatory alternative, must do so in writing within 21 days of the publication of this Notice.
