NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULE DEVELOPMENT

The School Board of Palm Beach County

RULE TITLE: Severest Consequences for Violent Acts.

RULE NUMBER: Policy 5.1814.

SUBJECT AREA TO BE ADDRESSED: Maximum student discipline for violent acts on school property, school sponsored transportation, or during a school sponsored activity.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: To protect school personnel and other students, this proposed Policy implements State Board of Education Rule 6A-1.0404, which requires school boards to impose the most severe consequences possible under their policies, when a student has been found to commit specified violent acts. Defines "most severe consequences" as expulsion for the remainder of the current school year and the entire next school year, with no possibility of early reinstatement, and with referral for criminal prosecution.

RULE DEVELOPMENT HEARING: It is expected that development of this Policy will be considered at the School Board's Special Meeting on Policies on August 19, 2002 (anticipated to be 2:30 p.m.), in the Board Chambers at 3300 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach, Fla. The meeting is open to the public.
