NOTICE OF PROPOSED POLICY ADOPTION

POLICY TITLE: Blood Glucose Monitoring.

POLICY NUMBER: 5.3212.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: To provide for supervising, assisting with, or conducting blood glucose monitoring of students with diabetes mellitus or recurrent hypoglycemia pursuant to Florida law.

SUMMARY: This proposed Policy implements and makes specific the provisions of Fla. Stat. § 232.465(2): Specifies the authority of non-medical school personnel to perform or assist with (after appropriate training) student blood glucose monitoring that has been ordered by the student's physician; gives parents/guardians the responsibility of notifying the school that the student will have a glucose monitoring device; authorizes staff development training as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent; requires an annual directive from the Superintendent to principals to remind them to notify school staff of students who will use monitoring devices; authorizes principals to designate at least two (2) personnel to be trained in accordance with the statute by one of the Florida-licensed medical professionals named therein; sets forth procedures for supervising or conducting such monitoring; provides for emergency care procedures in an individualized health care plan or 504 plan; limits liability consistent with § 232.46(2) and Board Policy 5.321.
