NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULE DEVELOPMENT & PUBLIC HEARING

RULE TITLE: Pediculosis (Head Lice) Prevention and Control.

RULE NUMBER: Policy 5.323.

SUBJECT AREA TO BE ADDRESSED: Prevention and control of head lice in the schools.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: To update the provisions of Administrative Directive 5.102 and incorporate them into this new Board Policy. Amendments to the Directive, to be incorporated in this new Policy, include: The principal/principal's designee/school nurse are empowered to provide preventative information to parents/guardians to encourage prevention of the occurrence of head lice in schools; only non-instructional staff will perform classroom head-lice checks; exclusion from school, related to pediculosis, will occur only for students who have been found to have live head lice; such exclusion will commence at the end of the school day rather than immediately after the presence of live lice has been confirmed; and students found to have nits only, will be monitored by the school nurse/principal's designee once per week for two weeks, and they will not be excluded from school unless the presence of live head lice is discovered.

PUBLIC HEARING: It is anticipated that this policy development will be considered at the School Board's Special Meeting on Policies on April 28, 2003, at 2:00 p.m., in the Board Chambers at 3300 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach, Fla. The meeting is open to the public.
