NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULE ADOPTION & PUBLIC HEARING

RULE TITLE: Eligibility for Participation in K-12 Extracurricular Activities.

RULE NUMBER: Policy 5.60.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: To update standards for scholastic, behavioral, and general eligibility requirements for participation in K-12 extracurricular activities, including non-sports interscholastic competitive activities and clubs; and nondiscriminatory practices in allowing students and appropriate employees to participate.

SUMMARY: This revision incorporates provisions from the corresponding administrative Directives, Student Progression Plan, and K-20 Education Code; specifies how to track data on equitable participation levels, without discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, disability, sex, marital status, or limited English proficiency; strengthens the residence requirements for participation in the school to which the student is first assigned in a given year; provides for participation by home-education and certain charter-school students; and clarifies that students may be required to cover the cost of their athletic insurance as a prerequisite to participating.

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE: Adoption of the proposed rule is anticipated to be considered at the School Board's Special Meeting on Policies on August 2, 2004, anticipated to begin at 2:15 p.m. in the Board Chambers at 3300 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach, Fla. AGENDA: A copy of the agenda will be available by July 26 on the District’s Web site.
