NOTICE OF PROPOSED POLICY ADOPTION

POLICY TITLE: Encouraging Large Schools to Subdivide into Schools-Within-a-School.

POLICY NUMBER: 7.134.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: To encourage schools that fall within certain statutory size definitions to subdivide into smaller units through an operational program known as "schools-within-a-school."

SUMMARY: This proposed Policy implements § 231.262(1), Fla. Stat., which requires school boards to adopt a policy of encouraging (but not requiring) large schools to subdivide into smaller units for the 2002-03 school year and thereafter, within existing resources; defines "schools-within-a-school;" describes three suggested models for such operational programs; specifies which schools are encouraged to subdivide; explains that establishment of any school-within-a-school will be carried out consistent with collective bargaining agreements if such agreements are applicable.
