School Board of Palm Beach County

NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULE DEVELOPMENT & PUBLIC HEARING

RULE TITLE: Instructional Materials Accountability.

RULE NUMBER: Policy 8.1225.

SUBJECT AREA TO BE ADDRESSED: Recovery of the new-purchase value of instructional materials, such as textbooks, that are lost, destroyed, or unnecessarily damaged during the first two years of use.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: To implement an exemption approved by the State Board of Education on February 17, 2004, under Charter District status. Although Fla. Stat. § 1006.28(3)(b) would normally permit recovery of 100% of a textbook's new-purchase-price value if it was lost, destroyed, or unnecessarily damaged during the first one year of use, this exemption allows 100% of the new-purchase price to be recovered during the first two years of use.

SPECIFIC RULEMAKING AUTHORITY: §§ 1001.41(2); 1006.28, Fla. Stat.

LAWS IMPLEMENTED: §§ 1006.28; 1006.42; 1003.62(2) and partial exemption from § 1006.28(3)(b), Fla. Stat.

CONTACT PERSON: Meezie Pierce, 3300 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL 33406.

THE PRELIMINARY TEXT of the proposed rule development may promptly be obtained without cost from the District's web site at www.SchoolBoardPolicies.com/revisions.htm.

PUBLIC HEARING: It is anticipated that this rule development will be considered at the School Board's Special Meeting on Policies on April 19, 2004, anticipated to begin at 5:00 p.m., in the Board Chambers at 3300 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach, Fla. The meeting is open to the public.
