New Business - Grants

Title: G3-Approve the Health Career Academy for Bilingual Students for Lake Worth Community High School.

Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the grant from Palm Healthcare Foundation for the Lake Worth Community High School Allied Health Career Academy for Bilingual students in the amount of $50,000 effective through March 30, 2007 and aurthorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities.

Description:

The purpose of this grant is to support Lake Worth Community High School in continuing the Allied Health Career Academy Program for bilingual students.  This program was developed as a career strand for bilingual students who attend Lake Worth Community High School and do not meet eligibility requirements for the Medical Services Choice Program.  Expenditure of funds may include but are not limited to contracted services, salaries, materials, supplies, equipment, uniforms and certification fees.

The Lake Worth Community High School Allied Health Career Academy for bilingual students will:

*Provide a seamless transition from high school into the health care workforce and/or post secondary education.

*Assist to reduce the critical shortage of multicultural staff in nursing and other allied health professions in Palm Beach County.

*Increase number of bilingual health professionals to meet the needs of the culturally diverse patient.

*Expand the collaborative efforts among community partners, healthcare providers and post secondary institutions.

The Lake Worth Community High School Allied Health Career Academy Program objectives are to:

*Provide skilled training for under-represented bilingual students to become medical professionals in careers such as Emergency Medical Technician, Pharmacy Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant, and Licentsed Practical Nursing.

*Provide scholarships to targeted secondary students for dual enrollment in a post-secondary medical career education training program while in high school.

*Provide Lake Worth Community High School boundaried students who do not meet the eligibililty criteria for the Medical Sciences Choice Program the opportunity to pursue a career in medicine.

*Provide opportunities for students to earn competitive salaries while pursing higher education.

The criteria for evaluating the implementation of this project will be the number of students successfully completing the program as evidenced by receiving occupational completion points and enrollment in post secondary health career programs.

Academy students have attended and graduated from the following post secondary programs: Emergency Medical Technician, Pharmacy Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant, and Licensed Practical Nursing.

Twenty-five students will graduate from the Lake Worth Community High School Allied Health Career Academy for bilingual students in Marcy 2006.

Lake Worth Community High School's Allied Health Career Academy for bilingual students will enroll fifty students in School Year 2006-2007.

Palm Healthcare Foundation Workforce Partnership has recognized Lake Worth Community High School's Allied Health Career Academy for bilingual students as an exemplary program for preparing students to enter the workforce.

The grant was approved by the Palm Healthcare Foundation on March 8, 2006.  We were unable to meet the deadline requirements for the March 2006 Board Meeting.

A copy of the contract is on file in the Board Minutes Office for review.

Financial Impact:
All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of $50,000.
