Title: G3-Just Read, Florida! Summer Teacher Academy Start-Up Funds

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve the Just Read, Florida! Summer Teacher Academy start-up funds in the amount of $22,500 and the non-Reading First participant stipend funding in the amount of $224,400 to support the Just Read, Florida! teacher academies and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities beginning July 1, 2006 and ending June 30, 2007. 

Description:

The Just Read, Florida! Teacher Academy is a 4-day professional development provided to all K-3, Exceptional Student Education (ESE), and English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers in order to improve the effectiveness of instruction and intervention practices.

The Just Read, Florida! Office, through the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium (PAEC), allocates funds in the amount of $7,500 for each Just Read, Florida! Teacher Academy. The start-up funds are used to purchase materials, equipment, and part-time pay for staff to work during the professional development sessions. Palm Beach County will host three separate Just Read, Florida! teacher academies this summer. The School District of Palm Beach County will receive a total of $22,500 in start-up funds from PAEC to host the summer teacher academies.

In addition, the Just Read, Florida! Office will provide funding for teacher stipends to pay participants that attend the summer academies from Non-Reading First schools.

The Department of Elementary Education will receive funding for approximately 300 participants. Each participant will be paid an hourly stipend of $22.44 plus benefits  for attending the four-day summer teacher academy. The total funding received from the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium (PAEC) for teacher reimbursement will be approximately $224,400.

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the district is $246,900 for the start-up funds and stipends to be paid to the participants. All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue.
