Title: UB1 Art / History Social Studies Program

Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the purchase of the comprehensive instructional history /art project from Art In History and authorize the Superintendent and Board Chairman to sign all necessary documents.

Description:

Approve the purchase of the comprehensive

instructional history/art project from

Art in History for the not-to-exceed amount of

$43,000.

·        Motion postponed due to concerns of the School Board Members:

Actions taken to rectify concerns and accommodate Board Members recommendations:

·       The vendor has recognized and immediately corrected the typographical error of the word “country” to “continent.” The vendor apologized for this very embarrassing error placed on the website through their web service, and fixed the error within 24 hours of our request.  The teacher’s guide and student information for this project did not include this error.

·       The lesson concerning Colonized Africa will be revised after input and recommendations from teachers/curricular administrators for the third revision of this teacher’s guide. The vendor recognizes that recommendations continue to improve their products.

·       The next printing of their product material, catalogs, etc. will adequately support the connection of the country of Egypt being within the African continent.   The vendor understands the importance of this connection for students.

·      The vendor has taken the recommendation of including African, Haitian, and Caribbean artwork through the African Diaspora in their product list.  As a way of addressing this issue, the vendor has offered the following:

         ·     Palm Beach County staff involvement in the development of five new African/Haitian/Caribbean projects

        ·      Pilot/test the projects in the classrooms in the

School District of Palm Beach County

         ·       Provide, for the next 5 years, 300 of each project per year worth at least $9,000, or a total of 1500 projects worth a total of $45,000 free of charge to Palm Beach County

·      Palm Beach County curriculum administrators and staff from various departments will be a part of the recommendation, revision, and development process of the existing product line and the new piloted projects.  Palm Beach County staff will work in conjunction with the Art in History staff of teachers and professors to create meaningful, accurate, and multicultural lessons.

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Title I Budget is estimated at $43,000.  There is no financial impact to the District operating budget.  The source of funds is Title I funds allocated to the Multicultural Education Department.
