Title: G14-Tobacco Prevention and Intervention Teacher Training Continuation Project – Final Year

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve the Tobacco Prevention and Intervention Teacher Training Continuation Project – Final Year for $35,000, effective July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities.

Description:

The purpose of the grant is to provide teacher training in Tobacco Use Prevention and Intervention in order to reduce tobacco use in the school district. This is the final year of the grant; only Florida school districts that already received funding are eligible to apply.

·         Funds will be used to purchase the Unitedstreamingvideo-on-demand website licensing for 67 schools. The website license allows the schools to access Sunshine State Standards' aligned videos and video clips about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) prevention; violence prevention and conflict resolution; character education; Science; Language Arts; Social Studies; Health; Foreign Languages; Math; vocational education; parenting skills and family life; safety; and staff development.

·         Research on Unitedstreamingindicates that its use increases student achievement within the grade level and content areas examined. Recent scientific evaluations in three districts in Virginia showed significant improvement in 6th and 8th grade math and 3rd  and 8th grade science and social studies test results.

·         This technology is utilized in over one third of the school districts in the country.

·         Usage reports indicate that there have been over 448 tobacco videos/video segments and lessons viewed in the schools this year. There have been over 108,000 videos/video segments and lessons viewed in all content areas. Over 400 teachers received a presentation on using the technology for tobacco prevention lessons.

·         The impact of this project will be measured by the reduction of tobacco incidents at school sites.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds Budget is an increase of $35,000 for one year.  All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue.  There is no financial impact to the Operating Budget.
