Title: G4-2005-2006 Title I School Improvement Initiative Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the 2005-2006 Title I School Improvement Initiative to the Florida Department of Education in the amount of $2,233,625 effective June 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007 and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities
Description: This entitlement grant supports scientifically based research strategies and school improvement strategies identified by the participating Title I Schools to assist students to meet proficiency on the FCAT. The following schools have been awarded the grant because of their free and reduced lunch percentage and the number of students they have scoring in Level 1 on the FCAT: Bear Lakes Middle, Boynton Beach High, Carver Middle, Congress Middle, Delray Boynton Academy, Everglades Preparatory Academy, Forest Hill High, Glades Central High, Gulfstream Goodwill Career, John F. Kennedy Middle, Lake Shore Middle, Lake Worth Middle, Noah's Ark International, Pahokee Middle/Senior, Palm Beach Lakes High and Toussaint L'Ouverture.
Activities provided in this grant must complement the School Improvement Plan and provide tutorials to students in Grades 3-12. Grant funding must be used for needs identified by schools and may include the following: • Hiring additional Intensive Reading teachers • Summer tutorial program • Saturday tutorial program • After-school tutorial program • Creating additional computer labs and/or mobile computer lab • Purchase software programs The evaluation piece of the grant requires that the schools agree to submit an annual report of FCAT scores for students tutored in their program(s).
Financial Impact:
The financial impact to Special Revenue Funds-Other Budget is an increase of $2,233,625 for the Title I School Improvement Initiative Program. These funds will be placed in the budget for the Department of NCLB/Federal Grants for the Title I School Improvement Program. All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue.
