Title: G8-Title I Migrant Education Grant Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the application for the 2006-2007 Migrant Education Grant to the Florida Department of Education in the estimated amount of $2,214,122.16 to become effective July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007, and to authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities.
Description: The Migrant Education Program is designed to identify and recruit all migratory children, ages 3 through 21, and provide supplementary educational and support services to meet their special educational needs in a coordinated and efficient manner.
Specifically, the grant supports schools with high concentrations of migrant students by helping to ensure that migratory children receive full and appropriate opportunities to meet the same challenging State academic content and student academic achievement standards that all children are expected to meet. Additionally, the program is designed to help the migratory children overcome educational disruptions, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, various health-related problems, and other factors that inhibit the ability of such children to do well in school.
Evaluation of the Grant includes: school attendance, graduation rate, number of referrals and the program effectiveness survey.
Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Special Revenue Funds - Other Budget is an increase of $2,212,122.16 for the Title I Migrant Education Program. These funds will be placed in the Department of Multicultural Education's budget for Migrant Education Programs. All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue.
