Title: Recommendation: I recommend approval of the purchase of Bio-Rad Laboratories science materials and authorize the Superintendent and Board Chairman to sign all necessary documents. Description: P6 - Approve the purchase of science curriculum for science labs at career academies from Bio-Rad Laboratories in the not-to-exceed amount of $300,000. · The School District has adopted a science curriculum to include Biotechnology into their science labs at Seminole Ridge and · In an effort to further enhance the Biotechnology programs, Bio-Rad Laboratories have developed the Biotechnology Explorer kits and curricula designed by teachers and scientists working together to integrate real-world biology topics and activities into existing biology curricula. · The Bio-Rad kits come complete with PowerPoint presentation for lab protocol and hands-on training for students. Lab packages provide all equipment needed to do all of the labs across a 4 year curriculum. Bio-Rad will be conducting workshops and training at no additional cost to the District through this partnership. · Bio-Rad laboratory kits consist of the following: · Elisa ImmunoExplorer- Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay - This is an antibody test used for detection of HIV and SARs and used to track pathogenic agents in water, food and air. · GMO foods - uses PCR and DNA to test for genetically modified corn in foods using the 35S promoter of the cauliflower mosaic virus and the synthase gene of agrobacterium tumefaciens. · PV92 PCR - PCR based DNA profiling, with an extension to hardy-weinberg equilibrium equation and population genetics · Genes in Bottle - DNA extraction - students create a necklace with their own DNA inside, great intro activity · Forensic DNA fingerprinting - analysis of 6 DNA sequences using "crime scene" and suspect DNA - This kit is unique due to use of Bio-Rad's "fast blast" stain. · Analysis of Precut Lambda DNA - Restriction analysis kit - intro to gel electrophoresis · Restriction analysis of Lambda DNA - takes the precut kit a step further and allows students to do the restriction digest themselves, thus adding a new skill to previously learned content. · pGlo Bacterial transformation - GFP gene is added to bacteria to produce recombinant bacteria. This kit extends past other available kits by providing an extension to gene regulation and the lac operon. · GFP protein chromatography - Students extend the bacterial transformation lab and extract the GFP protein from their cultured bacteria through HIC chromatography. · Secrets of the Rainforest - Development of a product, leads students through the process of drug discovery and marketing, this is an essential kit for the · Bio-Rad Biotechnology Explorer Kits are designed for life science, AP Biology, and biotechnology courses at the high school, community college, and university levels.
