Title: G2 SUCCEED Florida - Career Paths Competitive Grant

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board accept the SUCCEED Florida – Career Paths Competitive Grant Awards for John I. Leonard High School and South Technical Charter High School, from the Florida Department of Education in the amount of $304,080, effective July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts required for implementation of grant activities.

Description:

The SUCCEED Florida – Career Paths Competitive Grants will provide funding in the amount of $152,040 per school to John I. Leonard High School and South Technical Charter High School to offset start-up costs to plan and implement an Academy of Finance Career Academy at each school.

Grant funding will support the Academy of Finance planning (South Technical Charter High School) and implementation (John I. Leonard High School) activities at each school, including curriculum development, professional development, academy marketing, and staff attendance at National Academy Foundation Conferences.

Each school will form an Academy of Finance Advisory Board, made up of college and finance-related business partners, to ensure that students in the career academy participate in learning experiences in the context of real-world applications.

Measurable outcomes focus on improving achievement, increasing rigor and relevance in the curriculum, and improving graduation rates with increased preparation for college and careers.

The Florida Department of Education requires each school to submit a quarterly reporting form to show progress toward program goals, planning and implementation activities, and student performance data.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the Special Revenue- Other Funds budget will be an increase of $304,080 to the FY06 budget. All grant-related expenditures are authorized for payment in the amount of revenue.
