Title: AC4 Consider Approval of the STARLAB Dome at Village Academy Elementary School

Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the STARLAB Dome at Village Academy.  The STARLAB Dome will be funded by the Sara Jo & Arthur Kobacker Donor Advisory Fund at United Way of Palm Beach County.  A total of $29,000 was awarded to support the STARLAB Dome.

Description:

The STARLAB Dome is a portable planetarium consisting of a silver fabric dome, a projector, a fan and a vast array of projection cylinders, and supported with training and ample curriculum.  STARLAB creates a unique learning environment for virtually every level of education.  Although it is known as the premier portable planetarium, STARLAB can be used for far more than just astronomy.

The purpose of the STARLAB Dome is to provide students at Village Academy with interative, hands-on and minds-on science lessons.

The STARLAB will be integrated into a MicroSociety venture and will be used for experiential learning field trips within Village Academy.

The focus of the Science Dome will be to provide instruction and hands-on activities that reinforce classroom knowledge of the five primary strands identified in the Florida Department of Education Sunshine State Standards (1) Nature of Matter, (2) Energy, (3) Force & Motion, (4) Processes that Shape the Earth and (5) How Living Things Interact with their Environment.

Students will have an opportunity to identify the major bodies of the solar system, as well as apply knowledge gained through previous experiences to the task of understanding the need for colonization of another planet.

Students will be able to compare and contract the difference between orbit and rotation.  Students will identify the implications of being too close or too far from the sun when discussing human and plant life.

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the district is $29,000 from the Sara Jo & Arthur Kobacker Donor Advisory Fund at United Way of Palm Beach County.
