Title: G1 Mathematics Coach Grant

Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the Florida Department of Education Mathematics Coach Grant for Life Skills North Alternative School, Life Skills West Alternative School, Gold Coast School, Delray Full Service Center, South Technical Charter High School, and The IMAGINE Charter School, in the amount of $450,000, effective upon award through June 30, 2006, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant as required for implementation of the grant activities.

Description:

  • The Mathematics Coach Grant is a one year grant opportunity offered by the Florida Department of Education and authorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, P.L. 017-110, Section 1003, CFDA #84.010.
  • The Mathematics Coach Grant provides funds to districts with schools identified as "F" schools based on Florida's School Performance Grading System for 2004-2005.
  • Funding will provide salary and benefits for school-based mathematics coaches, training for school-site coaches, and materials for initial training and/or ongoing training in scientifically based research, quality instructional methods and strategies, and materials to implement Florida's Continuous Improvement Model.
  • Mathematics coaches will  provide professional development in scientifically-based mathematics instruction, strategies, and materials to improve student performance on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).
  • Evaluation required by the FDOE requires schools to submit quarterly reports in their School Improvement Plan reporting database consisting of the following information:
    • Documentation of Level 1 and Level 2 students served;
    • Documentation of students with disabilities served;
    • Implementation status to date;
    • Date of mathematics coach hiring;
    • Current certification status of mathematics coach hired;
    • Listing of professional development activities conducted by each mathematics coach to date;
    • Status of student achievement to date; and
    • Any other pertinent information related to mathematics instruction in the classroom.

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the FY 2006 Special Revenue - Other Funds budget will be an increase of $450,000.  All grant related expenditures are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue.
