§ The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office will provide the Truancy Interdiction Program (TIPS), including case management and counseling services for truant students. The TIPS program was designed with the primary goal of reducing truancy and delinquency by placing the students back into the educational environment. The program is equipped to receive truants from elementary school age up to the age of 16 during normal school hours.
§ Through the TIPS program, officers will attend School Based Team (SBT) meetings and will receive student referrals from the SBT. Once contact with the student is made, the student will be screened to determine the cause of the truancy. If underlying problems with the student are identified, the case will be referred to a Truancy Counselor for further evaluation. Once referred, students’ attendance and compliance are monitored for the remainder of the school year. For all referred cases, the parent or guardian is contacted regarding their responsibilities linked to their child’s truancy concern and the consequences of habitual truancy. The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office will also be responsible for notifying the students’ schools of their current status.
§ The goal of the TIPS program is to encourage parents’ participation in their children’s education, to prevent these children from becoming victims of perpetrators of crimes and to help them to become productive members of society.
§ The provider will address the core issues impacting school attendance and school truancy as a prevention to involvement with the courts/Department of Juvenile Justice.
