Title: G4-Boys and Girls Club Mentoring Services Grant Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the submission and receipt of the Boys and Girls Club Mentoring Services Discretionary Grant application from the Florida Department of Education for $120,676, effective July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities.
Description:
§ The Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, Inc., Computer Literacy Mentoring Services grant supports the implementation of Senate Bill 2600, Specific Appropriation 86, that authorizes the Commissioner of Education to award grant dollars for discretionary projects focused on mentoring at-risk students to enhance their knowledge and skills.
§ This grant is awarded annually to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. Although the School District is the applicant, the funding is designated by the Florida Department of Education for the Boys and Girls Clubs.
§ The Department of Safe Schools requested that the grant notification arrive prior to the start date; however, the DOE did not comply with the request. We received notification of the grant announcement in August 2006; however, the effective date is retroactive to July 1, 2006.
§ The Computer Literacy Mentoring Program will provide tutoring and mentoring services at 13 Boys and Girls Clubs in Boca Raton, Belle Glade, Delray Beach, Northwood, Riviera Beach, Wellington, and West Palm Beach.
§ The students who participate in this program attend the following schools: Banyan Creek, Belle Glade, Benoist Farms, Bethune, Binks Forest, Calusa, Crosspointe, K.E/Cunningham/Canal Point, D.D. Eisenhower, Glade View, Gove, Imagine, J.C. Mitchell, Lake Park, Lincoln, Melaleuca, New Horizons, Northboro, Northmore, Orchard View, Panther Run, Pine Grove, Pioneer Park, Plumosa, Roosevelt, Rosenwald, S.D. Spady, Seminole Trails, Egret Lake, Village Academy, Washington, Wellington, West Riviera, Westgate, Westward, and Wynnebrook Elementary Schools; Bear Lakes, Boca Raton, Carver, Jaega, John F. Kennedy, Lake Shore, Roosevelt, Wellington Landings, and Polo Park Middle Schools; and Atlantic, Boca Raton, Glades Central, Pahokee Middle/Senior, Palm Beach Lakes, Palm Beach Central, John I. Leonard, and Wellington High Schools.
§ The impact of this project will be measured by changes in the following criteria: increased in grades in reading and math, school and Boys and Girls Club attendance, discipline referrals, suspensions, Club performance records, increases in the number of words typed per minute.
Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds budget is an increase of $120,676. All grant-related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue. There is no financial impact to the Operating Budget.
