Title: School Food Service Wins Best Practice Award

Description: The School Food Service Department has won the Best Practice Award for Creative Use of USDA Commodities.  The goals of the department are to increase participation and efficiency of labor and improve customer service.  With those objectives in mind, it was determined that increased utilization of commodities would contribute toward those goals and positively impact the purchased food costs incurred in the operation of the food service program.  Since the implementation of commodity driven menu-planning, substantial financial savings have been realized.  In the past four years, the percentage of revenues used for purchased foods has been reduced overall by 4.61%.
