Title: G1-Florida SUCCEED - Career Path Grant

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board accept the SUCCEED Florida – Career Paths competitive  grant awards to establish career and professional (CAP) academies at  John I. Leonard High School, Olympic Heights High School, and South Technical Academy High School, from the Florida Department of Education, in the total amount of $311,085, effective October 19, 2006 through June 30, 2007, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts required for implementation of grant activities.

Description:

The SUCCEED Florida – Career Paths competitive grant awards will provide funding in the amount of $68,219 per new CAP academy to offset start-up costs for the implementation of three new CAP academies, as listed below:

  • Olympic Heights High School – Academy of Finance Academy
  • Olympic Heights High School – Academy for Hospitality and Tourism
  • South Technical High School – Academy for Film and Television

The SUCCEED grant awards will also provide second-year continuation funding in the amount of $53,214 per CAP academy to expand two previously funded academies:

  • John I. Leonard High SchoolAcademy of Finance
  • South Technical High SchoolAcademy of Finance

For each CAP academy, grant funds will support curriculum development, professional development, instructional materials and equipment, technical assistance and travel including staff attendance at career academy conferences.  Each school will form a career academy advisory board, made up of college and career-related business partners, to ensure that students in each career academy participate in learning experiences in the context of real-world applications.

Grant management will be provided by the Career Education Team in the Department of School Choice and Choice Programs. Measurable outcomes focus on improving achievement, increasing rigor and relevance in the curriculum, and improving graduation rates with increased preparation for college and careers. The Florida Department of Education requires a quarterly progress report for each CAP academy to show progress toward meeting program goals, academy implementation or expansion activities, and student performance data.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the Special Revenue- Other Funds budget will be an increase of $311,085 to the FY07 budget. All grant-related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment in the amount of revenue.
