Title: Discover Afterschool

Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board of Palm Beach County proclaims October 12, 2006, as Discover Afterschool! Day and commits this District to engage in innovative afterschool programs and activities to ensure our children and youth have access to affordable, high quality afterschool programs during non-school hours.

Description:

Lights On Afterschool! is celebrated nationwide to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America's children, families and communities.

In Palm Beach County over 19,000 students are enrolled in afterschool programs.  The School District and Prime Time Palm Beach County, Inc., provide significant leadership in the areas of community involvement in the education and well-being of our youth, grounded in the principle that quality afterschool programs are key in helping our children become successful adults.

This month students in Palm Beach County will be participating in Lights On Afterschool! and Discover Afterschool Day activities in celebration of afterschool programs.
