Title: G1-Prime Time Palm Beach County Community Service Learning Project Amendment

Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the Amendment to the Prime Time Palm Beach County Service Learning Grant from $30,000 to $34,617, effective January 24 through May 31, 2007, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents that are required for implementation of grant activities.

Description:

§       This Amendment will increase the Prime Time Community Service Learning Grant amount by $4,617, for a total grant amount of $34,617.  The increased funding will pay for transportation costs associated with the project.

§       This grant provides funding for training and community Service Learning projects at 18 community based middle school after-school program sites.

§       The Service Learning Coordinator administers and monitors the project, as well as provides technical assistance to all 18 self-selected community sites. Approximately 250 community middle school after-school students will participate in this project.

§       Ten projects will occur in the Riviera Beach area, while the remaining eight projects will occur in Belle Glade, Pahokee, and South Bay.

§       Research has proven that students who participate in Service Learning are less likely to engage in “risk” behaviors.

§       Participation in these projects promotes student competence in reading, group skills, cooperation and leadership.

§       The impact of this grant will be measured by the completion of community-based Service Learning projects.

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds Budget is an increase of $4,617.  There is no financial impact to the Operating Budget.
