Title: G2-Prime Time Palm Beach County Newspaper Grant Amendment Recommendation:
I recommend approval of the Amendment to the Prime Time Palm Beach County Service Learning Newspaper Grant from $50,000 to 56,841, effective January 24 through May 31, 2007, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents that are required for implementation of grant activities.
Description:
§ This Amendment will increase the Prime Time Service Learning Newspaper Grant by $6,841. This increase will cover mileage for the Service Learning Coordinator, project materials and tutors for writing skill development of students in the project.
§ The project will bring together students from ten community sites or middle school after-school sites from the eastern and western communities (five from the Riviera Beach area and five from the Belle Glade, Pahokee, and South Bay areas) to produce a quarterly teen newspaper with original writing and photography. The newspaper will be distributed throughout Palm Beach County after-school programs.
§ During the project youth will keep a notebook/journal of their experiences in developing a newspaper for reflection purposes and documentation of service hours.
§ The purpose of the newspaper is to enhance the visual arts, graphic design, creative writing, and critical thinking capacity of middle school age youth in the targeted areas.
§ The 10 community used sites will self-select to participate in this project. Approximately 200 community middle school after school students will participate in this project.
§ The impact of the project will be the development and distribution of the community middle school after-school newspaper.
Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds Budget is an increase of $6,841, from 50,000 to $56,841. There is no financial impact to the Operating Budget.
