Title: G5-Carl D. Perkins Secondary Career and Technical Education Programs for Students in the Department

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board accept the Carl D. Perkins Secondary Career and Technical Education Programs for Students in the Department of Juvenile Justice Residential Commitment Facilities competitive grant to establish improve and strengthen the quality of career and technical programs at Sago Palm Academy and Palm Beach Juvenile Correctional Facility in the amount of $150,000 effective January 25, 2007 through June 30, 2007, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts required for implementation of grant activities.

Description:

The Carl D. Perkins Secondary Career and Technical Education Programs for Students in the Department of Juvenile Justice Residential Commitment Facilities competitive grant will establish, improve, and strengthen the quality of career and technical programs, with much needed upgrades and modernization of instructional equipment, materials, supplies, and teacher training, targeting occupational areas at Sago Palm Academy and Palm Beach Juvenile Correctional Facility in the amount of $75,000 each as listed below:

*Sago Palm Academy - Building Construction Technology, Automotive Detailing, and Horticulture
*Palm Beach Juvenile Correctional Facility - Horticulture

For each school center, grant funds will support upgrades and modernization of instructional equipment, materials, supplies, and teacher training.  Activities and methods will include new and enhanced Career Technology Education courses, career exploratory courses, career counseling, individual academic/career planning, and activities to build employability skills.  As a result, students will exit with improved academic and marketable job skills to enhance their preparation for gainful employment, graduation, and/or postsecondary education. 

Grant management will be provided by the School Administrator, Business Advisory Board, and the Department of Alternative Education.

Measurable outcomes focus on student academic improvement in reading and vocational employability skills. 

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds budget will be an increase of $150,000 to the FY07 budget.  All grant-related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment in the amount of the revenue.
