New Business - Charter Schools

Title: CS1 Public Charter School Grant Program 2007-2009 Implementation Projects

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve the Public Charter School Grant Program 2007-2009 Implementation Projects application for The Palm Beach Academy for Learning in the amount of $30,800.00, for the first year implementation (first budget period), effective upon award, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities.

 

Description:

The Public Charter School Grant Program 2007-2009 Implementation Projects is a competitive grant authorized by Title V, Part B, Subpart 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

 

This Implementation Grant provides funds to schools that have been operating for less than one year and have not previously received a project award under the Public Charter School Grant Program.

 

The purpose of the funding is to:

  • Expand the number of high-quality charter schools available to students by providing financial assistance for the initial implementation of charter schools;
  • Increase understanding of the charter school model; and
  • Evaluate the effects of charter schools, including their effect on students, student academic achievement, staff, and parents.

 The Implementation Grant application submitted for the following one (1) charter school has been reviewed by the appropriate District staff:

 

1.      The Palm Beach Academy for Learning is reapplying for the Implementation Projects Grant due to being denied for 06/07.

 

Copies of the Grant are on file in the Board Office.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the Special Revenue – Other Funds budget is a total of $30,800.00 in the 2007-2009 Public Charter School Grant Program Implementation Projects Grant.  With a mutual agreement between the Charter School and the District, a 2.48% indirect cost may be payable to the District.  All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized up to the amount of the revenue.
