Title: Consider Approval of the FY07-08 School Calendar

Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the FY07-08 School Calendar.

Description:

The proposed school calendar for school year 2007-08 was developed through the efforts of a committee that consisted of parents, principals, representatives from the Classroom Teachers' Association, and representation from the Principals and Staff Associations, as well as various District departments, including Payroll and Labor Relations.  The proposed calendar was presented to all principals at their respective Division meetings and at the December A&S meeting by the Superintendent.  The proposed calendar was also posted on the District website in December 2006.

The committee met on three occasions and considered the following prior to making a final recommendation:

Change to Section 1001.42(4)(f), F.S., regarding the responsibility of district school boards to set start school dates beginning with the 2007-2008 school year.  Under the statute, the opening date for schools in the district may not be earlier than 14 days before Labor Day each year.  The only allowable exclusions to this statute are year round schools and Department of Juvenile Justice programs.

Providing maximum instructional time prior to the administration of the state assessment.

Providing schools sufficient time to complete packing of state assessment materials upon completion of the state assessment.

Ensuring adequate instructional time during each semester to complete the curriculum requirements prior to final and midterm exams and to earn credits.

Honoring the bargaining agreements regarding paid holidays.

Historic days of high absenteeism.

Requests from the community to consider Election Day and Veteran's Day as holidays.

The proposed calendar:

Starts school for students on Wednesday, August 22, 2007.

Ends the first semester on January 17, 2008 with students and staff returning to school on Monday, January 7, 2008 following winter break.

Contains 90 instructional days each semester.

Contains balanced trimesters and quarters.

Ends the second semester for students on June 6, 2008.

Schedules spring break from April 7-11, 2008.

Provides Presidents' Day as a holiday for all employees.

Provides traditional high absentee days (September 13, 2007 and March 21, 2008 as teacher and student holidays, only)

Designates Emergency Make-up days.

Specifies dates for Professional Development Days and Learning Team Meeting days.

Financial Impact:
