Title: Recommendation: Description: I. The Florida Legislature convenes on September 18, 2007 to begin work on reducing state expenditures by $1.1 billion. School districts have been notified by the Florida Department of Education to prepare for an overall 2% budget reduction in total state and local dollars. Following extensive discussion with other school districts and state organizations including: Florida School Boards Association; Florida Association of District School Superintendents; the attached document (2007 Special Session "C" Recommendations Potential FY08 Revenue Shortfall Treasure Coast School District Workgroup) reflects the consensus of input. Of paramount importance to K-12 education is to have school districts held harmless and protected from any budget cuts. If such is not possible, then full flexibility should be given to districts so that these reductions can be absorbed with minimal impact to the classroom. II. The preliminary 2008 Legislative Proposals reflect input from staff, a review of action taken during the 2007 Legislative Sessions, and a review of issues among school districts with programs and needs similar to Palm Beach County. Upon adoption by the Board these recommendations will be submitted to the Treasure Coast Workgroup, Greater Florida Consortium of School Boards, Florida Association of School District Superintendents, and the Florida School Boards Association for inclusion in their Legislative Programs for next year. The Board may modify or add to these proposals at any time up to and through the Regular Session which begins on March 4, 2008.
