Commuter Challenge
The 1st Annual Palm Beach Commuter Challenge is a 4 week training program that enables kids to complete a full marathon (26.2 miles) by biking or rolling. The commuter challenge was created by the Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning organization to promote the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety. The 1st Annual Palm Beach Commuter Challenge celebration was completed in grand fashion on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Palm Beach Waterfront located on South Flagler Drive. The Palm Beach Commuter Challenge was endorsed by The School District of Palm Beach County. All elementary schools were encouraged to participate.
Physical Education teachers provided log sheets which tracked the number of miles students rode their bicycles over a four week period of time. There were six schools that participated in the Commuter Challenge (Everglades, Equestrian Trails, Gove, Lake Park, Loxahatchee Groves and Palm Beach Public). The top three students that logged the greatest number of miles were Kian Hidalgo (160) from Everglades Elementary, Reagan Lopez (127) from Everglades Elementary, and Samantha Palmer (111) from Loxahatchee Groves.
The 1st Annual Commuter Challenge had 111 participants from 6 schools from the District.
The School District partners with the Devos-Blum YMCA to provide bicycle training to third grade students throughout Palm Beach County. During the SY15/16, the Devos-Blum YMCA provided bicycle training to over 4,000 third grade students.
