McKinney-Vento Program (MVP)

Every Child Has the Right to an Education

The McKinney-Vento Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures the educational rights of homeless children and youth. The MVP team works to ensure these rights by addressing problems often faced by homeless children and youth in enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school. Each school in every region throughout the district is served as well as family homeless shelters, and domestic violence shelters.

During the 2015-2016 school year over 3700 children and youth experiencing homelessness were identified throughout our district.

Our goal is to ensure that every student experiencing homelessness has access to the educational and other services they need to enable them to meet the same challenging state student academic achievement standards to which all students are held.

The McKinney-Vento Program provides

  • Case management and advocacy services to homeless students and families;
  • School and community training and professional development;
  • Community and District resource and referral information;
  • Assistance with immediate enrollment, transportation, free school meals;
  • Uniforms, backpacks, and school supplies;
  • Assistance obtaining birth certificates, vaccinations, vaccination records;
  • And much more!
