TITLE:     EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER for the DEAF & HARD OF HEARING - NON-LEVELED

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.        Eighteen (18) years of age or older (6A-1.070)(1)(b). 

2.        High school diploma or equivalent.

3.        Pass District sign language skills screening.

4.        Interpreting experience (one of the following):

a.        Completion of sign language skills training.

b.        Documentation of sign language/cued speech training, experience and exposure.

c.        Deaf/hard of hearing person with native language experience.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

1.        Provides interpreting or transliterating services to students who are deaf/hard of hearing at one or more sites using the appropriate mode of communication as specified by the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Activities requiring the services of the interpreter include, but are not limited to, lectures, field trips, discussions, films, other media and special projects.

2.        Provides interpreting or transliterating services for school functions or activities that may include consumers, other than students who are deaf. Activities requiring the services of the interpreter include, but are not limited to, parent teacher conferences, IEP meetings, and performances.

3.        Prepares and reviews for interpreting or transliterating services by becoming familiar with academic materials, concepts and vocabulary and by suggesting appropriate accommodations for individual student needs.

4.        Participates as a member of the educational team including IEP participation and documentation; and may provide technical assistance to the school staff and administrators.

5.        Assigned to interpret for students or classrooms by the supervisor or supervisor’s designee.

6.        Attends and participates in conferences, staff meetings and in-service activities as directed.

7.        Adheres to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf/National Association for the Deaf (RID/NAD) Code of Professional Conduct and/or EIPA Guidelines for Professional Conduct, including confidentiality, conduct and professionalism. 

8.        Maintains appropriate professional interpreting credentials, including annual state levels and annual certification maintenance.

9.        Demonstrates continuing interest in self-improvement with regard to interpreting skills and general understanding of the educational process.

 

Performance Effectiveness Criteria:

In addition to the employee being responsible for each of the performance responsibilities listed herein, periodic and special reports to the Board and other entities will be provided regarding the impact of this position with respect to progress toward annually established District and Divisional goals and objectives for, but not necessarily limited to, the following areas: 1) Student Performance, 2) Customer Service, 3) Fiscal Accountability and Responsibility, 4) Process Efficiencies and Improvements, and 5) Employee Learning and Growth.
