Wellness Promotion Task Force

The WPTF Mission is:

To create and educational forum that allows District and community partners to successfully collaborate in the promotion of healthier lives. With the District’s ultimate goal of improving student performance, the direction of the WPTF is to encourage a proactive approach to holistically address the health, wellness, and safety of all school children, staff, parents, and the community.

The first WPTF meeting was held on August 10, 2006. Five WPTF meetings are held annually to discuss wellness initiatives. Each meeting during FY16 were themed to include: Going Green-Environmental and Conservation Practices, Partners in in Health and Wellness, School Health and Best Practices, Student Mental Health and Wellness, and Physical Activity and Well-being. In each of these meetings, speakers from within the District and from community partners shared information and provided resources for wellness practices. Wellness Promotion Task Force Surveys

The Task Force meeting attendees were surveyed and results of all five meetings were compiled. The Core Team reviews this data and utilizes it for future assessment and direction of the Task Force.

The Wellness Promotion Task Force hosted a Wellness Poster Contest during FY 2016. The purpose of this contest is to encourage, promote and engage students in making choices to improve their health and wellness. Students were asked to create a poster to showcase what wellness means to them. Four schools were selected to participate based on various communication related to health and wellness efforts made at that school site: Allamanda Elementary, Starlight Cove Elementary, Carver Middle School, and Atlantic High School.

Each of the school’s nurse served as the school based contact for the contest. School Food Service provided a bale of “sprouts”. The sprouts paper is an eco-friendly, 100% recyclable paper embedded with a variety of easy to grow flower seeds when planted. With the assistance of each school’s art teacher, the students were able to use the textured paper to create beautiful, meaningful artwork.

The four top winners were:

  • Calleigh Ann Deyoe, Carver Middle School- Grand prize winner
  • Jin Li, Allamanda Elementary
  • Loraine Medina, Starlight Elementary
  • Garby Dorsainvil, Atlantic High School

The grand prize winner received a Wii Fit. The remaining three top winners received an iPod with mini speakers. All students who participated were entered into a school drawing for a chance to win 1 of 3 $25 ToysRUs gift cards.

Wellness Promotion Task Force Core Team

The Wellness Promotion Task Force (WPTF) created a forum for the district and community partners to collaborate in promoting healthier lives. The goal of improving student performance can only be reached by encouraging a proactive approach to holistically address the health, wellness, and safety for all school children and staff, parents, and the community. The Task Force is a coalition instrumental in promoting wellness and fulfilling the requirements under Public Law 111-296.

A core team of school district representatives and community partners was developed this year to strategically plan each meeting. Current Information was discussed on health and wellness events and new ideas and topics were introduced. We delivered five successful WPTF meetings in the 2015-2016 school year. There was a great participation from remarkable speakers, district leadership and administrators, students, teachers, parents, and many community partners and stakeholders.
