Nutrition Education - Health Fairs

During the 2012-2013 school year, the School Food Service (SFS) Department hosted two health fairs – one at Hammock Pointe Elementary and one at Seminole Ridge Community High. The themes surrounding the health fairs promoted the campaigns set forth by the Produce for Better Health Foundation and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics “National Nutrition Month”. The health fair hosted at Hammock Pointe Elementary School on November 7, 2012 promoted “Fruits & Veggies More Matters” and the health fair hosted at Seminole Ridge Community High School on March 20, 2013 promoted “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day”.

Health fairs take time to plan and organize. Chantal Gellermann, SFS Nutrition Educator, works with local organizations and internal district departments to make these events fun, educational, and interesting for the students and faculty involved. To promote the health fair and the organizations that partner with us, a press release was shared with the community via the District’s Public Affairs Department.

Pete Wood, SFS Training Coordinator, built an impressive farmers market at each of the health fairs to showcase a beautiful array of fresh fruits and vegetables. The produce for the farmers market was made available by a gracious donation from one of the district’s awarded produce vendors Erneston & Sons, Inc. Everyone that attended the health fairs had the opportunity to sample fresh fruits and vegetables and even take produce from the farmers market.

This year the two schools selected to host the health fairs added their own unique flare to the day:

The health fair had many wonderful participants, including the DeVos-Blum Family YMCA of Boynton Beach, the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Palm Beach County, and Ms. Brandi Thompson RDN, LD/N, an Ambassador of Boca Raton’s Food Revolution Day.

Faculty and students were very enthusiastic; they were willing to try new fruits and vegetables and asked questions about their health and that of their parents. Principal, James Campbell, even reported that the students were so pleased with the event that many requested it be repeated annually.
