·         College Board applied to the Picower Foundation for a grant to provide a two-fold initiative for the School District:
- The implementation of the College Board’s SpringBoard Program in the School-within-a-School Choice Program.
 - Provide Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement professional development training for teachers in middle and high schools to support Single School Culture for Academics.

·         The grant will fund a total of 2.25 resource teachers.  The FY05 grant currently funds one resource teacher.  The FY06 grant will fund 1.25 additional resource teachers.

School-within-a-School
·         Using SpringBoard, the School-within-a-School Program will work to increase academic rigor and address the needs of 2,162 students whose schools did not meet adequate yearly progress.

·         SpringBoard is a comprehensive program that integrates rigorous standards, instructional materials, professional development, and diagnostic assessments.

·         Seventeen secondary schools may not meet adequate yearly progress.  SpringBoard will be implemented in these 17 School-within-a-School Programs and will serve 46 students per grade in each school, grades 6-10.

Single School Culture for Academics with Pre-AP and AP Professional Development
·         Single School Culture for Academics addresses teacher professional development, on a district-wide level, and aims to create academic cohesion within each school.

·         With parallel curricula and an understanding of cross-curricular needs, more students will be better directed toward college preparation and post-secondary success.  This initiative will:
o        Offer instructional leadership and content area teacher professional development workshops to support this emphasis on rigor;
o        Develop district professional development leaders to promote the Single School Culture goal of all teachers working to enhance students' higher order thinking skills; and
o        Provide district and school administrators with another opportunity to see the power of rigorous curriculum that focuses on critical thinking.

·         Teachers from 12 high schools and 20 middle schools (3,720 teachers)—the highest priority schools, with the largest population of minority students, low FCAT scores and low graduation/passing rates—will be served.

·         The participating schools will be:
o        Current Middle Schools FY05: Bear Lakes, Christa McAuliffe, Congress, Conniston, Crestwood, H.L. Watkins, Jefferson Davis, John F. Kennedy, Lakeshore, Lake Worth, Lantana, Pahokee, Roosevelt, Western Pines, Woodlands
