Title: CS2 Charter for Academy for Creative Education

Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the Charter for Academy for Creative Education, effective April 21, 2005, through June 30, 2008.

Description:

Section 1002.33, Florida Statutes (2003), authorizes Charter Schools as part of the state's program of public education.

The Academy for Creative Education's mission will be to integrate art and creative processes into all aspects of education.  Students will learn to think creatively and spatially, visualize images and outcomes, and to seek and acknowledge multiple solutions in linear and non-linear ways.  The students will develop the ability to make choices that positively demonstrate their need to take responsibility for themselves and for the world around them.  The integrated art education will help students to appreciate diversity, be sensitive to the feelings of others,  and understand individual differences.  Education through art will expand the concept of education beyond the traditional academic design and allow all students to learn, contribute, and excel according to their dominant and highly individualized learning styles.

The school will initially serve students in grades kindergarten (K) through second (2nd) and will grow one grade level per year through fifth (5th) grade.

The Palm Beach County School Board approved the original application for Academy for Creative Education on January 19, 2005.

Pursuant to Florida Statute 1002.33, the terms and conditions for the operation of the Charter School shall be set forth by the District and the applicant in a written contractual agreement, called a Charter. The Charter for Academy for Creative Education has been reviewed and approved by the appropriate District departments and the Governing Board of the Charter School.

Copies of the Charter is on file in the Board Minutes Office for review.

Financial Impact:
Each Charter School will receive 95% of the funded FTE generated by up to 500 students. The District will retain 5% of the FTE, up to 500 students, as per Florida Statute.
