Title: PD1 Supplement for Registered Dietitians

Recommendation:
I recommend the School Board approve a supplement for Registered Dietitians in the School Food Service Department.

Description:

*  On June 30, the President signed the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization of 2004 into law.  This new law makes it mandatory that every school district develop a local wellness policy. The School Food Service Department will be required through this legislation to create and implement the wellness plan and Registered Dietitians will have the challenge of the additional responsibilities.

*  Registered Dietitians are uniquely positioned to be the primary information resource regarding the relationships among diet, health, and disease prevention.  Dietetic training in the relationship between food and health throughout the life cycle allows the Registered Dietitian to interpret the science, communicate the results and help determine realistic and healthy policy options.

*  Both the American Dietetic Association and the School Nutrition Association advocate that Registered Dietitians should be actively involved in promoting optimal nutrition in community settings and should advocate for the inclusion of healthy eating, in addition to other health-promoting behaviors.

*  Registered Dietitians must meet stringent requirements to earn and maintain the "R.D." credential which includes:   Completing a minimum of a bachelor's degree at an accredited university with course work approved by the Commission of Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA);Completion of a CADE approved supervise internship; pass a national credentialing exam administered by the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR); and complete continuing professional educational requirements annually to maintain registration status.

*  Registered Dietitians will receive a supplement rate of $2,500.00 annually.

* Currently there are three Registered Dietitians on staff,  total estimated expenditure for the Registered Dietitian Supplement is $7,500.00 annually.

Financial Impact:
The Funding source is the School Food Service Department budget which does not impact the Operating Budget.  Supplement is $7,500.00 annually.
