Title: G4 The Alternative Schools/Public Private Partnerships Competitive Grant (CEP)

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board accept The Alternative Schools/Public Private Partnerships grant in the amount of $4,135,693 with approximately $460,693 for planning effective May 18, 2005 with a no-cost extension through December 31, 2005 and approximately $3,675,000 for implementation effective January 1, 2006 through June 30, 2008, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts required for grant activities.

Description:

  • The Alternative Schools/Public Private Partnerships Competitive Grant will support the District's partnership with Community Education Partners (CEP) to establish an alternative school for disruptive and low performing students in grades 6 - 12.
  • The CEP program will serve students in small learning communities to maximize the opportunity for students to learn in a safe, structured environment while minimizing the potential for disruption.
  • Parents or guardians will be actively involved in the orientation and educational decisions for each student.
  • Students will be enrolled in the CEP alternative school for 180 days, during which time they will be prepared to return to traditional secondary school environment.
  • This is a 4-year grant award from The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) to the district as follows:

  • Upon approval of the CEP contract, the CEP alternative school is scheduled to open in January 2006.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the FY 2005 Special Revenue - Other Funds budget will be an increase of $460,693.  The financial impact to the FY 2006 through FY 2008 Special Revenue-Other Funds budget will be $3,675,000.  All grant related expenditures are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue.

Due to its large size, a copy of the grant is on file in the Board Minutes Office for review.
