Title: P11 Subscription to BrainPop Software

Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the purchase of BrainPop Software Subscription for one year and authorize the Superintendent and Board Chairman to sign all necessary documents.

Description:

Approve the purchase of BrainPop, a web-based collection of animated movies covering concepts in Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, Health and Technology for grades 4 through 8, in the not-to-exceed amount of $31,680.

·      BrainPop is the leading producer of standards-based animated educational movies in the U.S., with over 15% of all school districts currently subscribing.

·      During a two month trial of BrainPop in Palm Beach County, over 1,000 students accessed the service on a daily basis.

·      BrainPop has been extremely popular with both teachers and students. Its short and often humorous look at educational concepts teaches in a non-threatening and highly engaging manner that is particularly appropriate for upper elementary and middle school students.

·      BrainPop is a web-based service that can be used from any computer at any time, providing valuable homework assistance and educational enrichment. A subscription to BrainPop will support our efforts in bridging the digital divide and in making more educational content available through our Learning Tools portal students working at home, in local libraries, community centers and other locations.

·      Each BrainPop movie is accompanied by an interactive quiz, experiment, comic strip, timeline and printable activity page.

·      A special teacher’s section of BrainPop contains lesson plans, standards correlation, and ideas for using BrainPop in the classroom.

·      BrainPop is endorsed by the Principal’s Technology Committee and scores of teachers who have written to the Educational Technology Department requesting the service by purchased for use in their classrooms.

·      This subscription will be for one year.

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Capital Budget is estimated at $31,680.  The source of funds is the Middle School Instructional Technology Funds.
