Title: AC15 Renewal of Agreement with Pine Jog Environmental Education Center Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the renewal agreement with the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center in the amount of $31,000 beginning July 1, 2005, and ending June 30, 2006.
Description:
The Pine Jog Environmental Education Center will provide a comprehensive professional development program to designated schools: Beacon Cove, Cholee Lake, Coral Sunset, Del Prado, Discovery Key, D. D. Eisenhower, Freedom Shores, Greenacres, Lighthouse, Melaleuca, Northmore, Palm Springs, West Gate and Westward elementary schools. In addition, a second comprehensive professional development program will be offered to a total of 30 teachers from a minimum of fifteen additional elementary schools that apply during an open enrollment period on a first-come, first-serve basis. Preference is given to teachers of grades 3, 4 and 5.
4 Specifically these programs supports professional development for teachers in science content and process skills correlated to the Sunshine State Standards Benchmarks and Grade Level Expectations in Science, development and implementation of interdisciplinary instruction for a standards-based curriculum, and other instructional strategies that reflect focus areas of the District and the preparation of teachers and students for Science FCAT. These programs reflect current research, are tied to content and student performance standards, and provide for on-going follow-up activities.
4 All teachers in the District will be able to access a selection of model lessons and units produced by the teachers involved in the Pine Jog professional development program through the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center's website.
4 Evaluation of the program includes teacher participation and participant evaluations; follow-up implementation surveys; and student pre/post assessment of science content knowledge.
In 2005, the fourteen (14) elementary schools listed above participated in the Pine Jog professional development. Additionally, the following schools will participate in the June professional development program as a result of the open enrollment process: Addison Mizner, Banyan Creek, Benoist Farms, Calusa, Galaxy, Gove, Grassy Waters, Hammock Pointe, Highland, Indian Pines, Jerry Thomas, Limestone Creek, Loxahatchee Groves, Panther Run, Pierce Hammock, Royal Palm Beach, and Wellington Elementary Schools. Under the contractual agreement with the District, 190 teachers at the designated schools received a total of 3,398 hours of professional development. As a result of the teacher education provided through the contract, 3,502 students in grades K-5 participated in interactive, standards-based field experiences in conjunction with the integrated science instruction.
Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the District is $31,000. The source of funds is in the Department of Elementary Education budget.
