Sonja Kelly is truly representative of Palm Beach County "growing its own" teachers. Ms. Kelly, a native of Palm Beach County, graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at Suncoast Community High School. Throughout high school, Sonja actively participated in the Florida Future Educators of America (FFEA) program and was selected as a FFEA College Scholarship recipient. Sonja earned a Master of Science Degree in English Education from Florida A&M University and was recruited to teach at Suncoast Community High School by former principal, Kay Carnes.
In nominating Sonja, Suncoast principal Gloria Crutchfield said, "As Interdisciplinary Magnet Program coordinator, Ms. Kelly structures her coursework to a rigorous and relevant level which results in significant learning gains." Ms. Kelly mentors beginning teachers, presents at conferences, and sponsors many extra-curricular activities for students.
Ms. Kelly was a member of the Chargersonic Marching Band during her high school years, and is now the Auxiliary Director of this superior rated marching band. Ernest Brown, Suncoast's Director of Bands noted that, "I have known Sonja as an exceptional student and now as an impressive colleague. Not only is Ms. Kelly one of the best educators, but also I consider her to be among our nation's finest"
Ms. Kelly will now represent Palm Beach County at the regional level in the Florida Department of Education Burdines-Macy's Teacher of the Year Program.
