Title: P1 Textbooks from “A Book Company LLC”

Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the purchase of textbooks from “A Book Company LLC” doing business as ecampus.com and authorize the Superintendent and Board Chairman to sign all necessary documents.

Description:

Approve the purchase of textbooks from “A Book Company LLC” doing business as ecampus.com, in the not-to-exceed amount of $150,000.

·      This is to purchase textbooks for teachers enrolled in graduate level classes at Nova Southeastern University per the teacher Training Agreement approved by the School Board on April 23, 2004.

·      The No Child Left Behind Law requires that all teachers in Title I schools be highly qualified and certified in the areas to which they are assigned.  Through an agreement with Nova Southeastern University and MOU with the Classroom Teachers Association, Title I teachers are taking graduate level classes to become certified in their assigned area and/or to earn a Masters Degree in a core subject area.

·      The No Child Left Behind Law requires that the LEA set aside a minimum of 5% of their Title I allocation for professional development activities to ensure teachers and paraprofessionals meet the staff qualifications required by this law.

·      Per the agreement, the Palm Beach County School District is to provide textbooks through Title I funds.  This is the third and final year of the three-year agreement..

·      Forty-one teachers received their Masters Degree in May 2005.  Nineteen teachers will finish their degree requirements in August 2005.  Twenty-three teachers will finish their degree requirements in December 2005. One hundred and fifteen teachers will finish their degree requirements after December 2005.

·      One hundred and thirty-four of the degrees will be in reading, twenty-three will be in math, twelve will be in ESE, and twenty-nine will be in K-6.

·      The one hundred ninety-eight teachers in this program include teachers from all four areas of the District.

·      The majority of the teachers are from AAA schools.

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Special Revenue Budget is estimated at $150,000.  The source of funds is the Title I Basic Grant.
