New Business - Curriculum/Learning Support

Title: CLS1 Approval of Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Program

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve a program for Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten in the amount of $933,480 effective July 21, 2005 – June 30, 2006 and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and applications related to the program which are required by the State for implementation of program activities.

Description:

This program will:

4          Be in the first year of implementation.

4          Provide a high quality, developmentally appropriate preschool experience with opportunities for active learning, utilization of the critical thinking process, and provide activities that focus on the successful transition to kindergarten.

4          Provide early identification of children who may need speech/language, social, emotional, or behavioral health services.

4          Provide parent involvement activities and transition into kindergarten activities.

4          Provide a 540 hour program for up to 720 four-year old children at 26 elementary schools.

4          Include the following elementary schools that were selected based on existing Pre-K sites -

West Area - Belle Glade, Glade View, K. E. Cunningham/Canal Point, Rosenwald and

Wynnebrook

North Area - Lincoln

Central Area - Heritage, Palmetto, Roosevelt, Starlight Cove, UB Kinsey, and Westward

South Area - Galaxy, Highland, Pine Grove and Rolling Green

4          Receive funding based upon the VPK rate of $2593 per child that will be reimbursed by the Early Learning Coalition through Family Central.  These dollars will pay for the operational costs provided during the academic school year.

4          Receive supplemental revenue from School Readiness dollars for eligible children and quality dollars from the Quality Rating System.

4          Be evaluated using the SRUSS (School Readiness Uniform Screening System) Kindergarten Readiness Instruments.

 

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the District is an increase up to $933,480.  Funds are allocated to the Department of Elementary Education.  There is no financial impact to the Operating Budget.
