Title: G2 Lake Park Safety Patrol Community Leadership Development Program Grant

Recommendation:

Recommend that the School Board approve the grant project entitled, Lake Park Elementary Safety Patrol Community Leadership Development Program, awarding $14,000.00 from the Mary and Robert Pew Public Education Fund.

Description:

Each year the safety patrols at Lake Park Elementary have the opportunity to take advantage of the annual Palm Beach County Patrol Trip to Washington D.C.  The students fortunate enough to participate return to the school with a better understanding of our country’s history, how our history impacts society today, and the role of our Federal Government.

Despite a great deal of coordinated fundraising efforts by the patrol sponsor and the fifth grade teachers, only a small percentage of the patrols are able to participate.  All of the patrol parents would love their children to have this opportunity.  However, due to the cost of the trip, they simply cannot afford it.

The purpose of this program is to develop the leadership and critical thinking skills of the safety patrols by exposing them to The Continuous Quality Improvement Model for problem solving, and by providing several opportunities for them to implement this strategy while learning about the successful practices of area businesses and organizations.  Students who complete the program will be awarded $500.00 toward the cost of their trip to Washington D.C.

As a result of the grant, students will:

Ø      Learn, practice and master the six-step process for the Continuous Quality Improvement Model

Ø      Participate in 90 hours of after school training presented by area businesses and organizations

Ø      Present a power point presentation

Ø      Improve their critical thinking skills

Ø Improve their FCAT math score by at least 10% from the previous year

This is a non-competitive grant, in the amount of $14,000.00 for one year.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds budget is an increase of $14,000.  These funds will be allocated to Lake Park Elementary School budget.   All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payments up to the amount of revenue allocated.
