Title: Recommendation: I recommend that the school Board approve the Reading First support funds in the amount of $67,500.00 and the non-Reading First stipend funds in the amount of $200,183.00 to support the Reading First Summer Reading Academies. Description: A requirement for the Reading First grant is for all K-3 teachers at Reading First Schools to attend a Four Day Summer Reading Content Academy. The academies provide foundational information regarding reading instruction. The Just Read, Florida! Office, through the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium (PAEC), provides a funding allocation of $7500 for each Reading First Summer Academy training session to assist with materials, equipment, and part-time pay for staff to work during the training. Palm Beach County will provide nine separate reading academies in the district this summer. Therefore, the District will receive a total of $67,500 in start-up funds. Additionally, the Just Read, Florida! Office will provide funding to pay stipends for all participants who attend the Summer Reading Academy from non-Reading First schools. The Department of Elementary Education will provide an opportunity for five staff members (2 ESE teachers, 2 Reading Leaders, and 1 Reading Coach) from each non-Reading First School to attend the training.
