§ This funding will provide expanded after-school programs at the following eight elementary schools: Barton, Forest Park, Lantana, Pleasant City, South Grade, Village Academy, West Gate and Westward.
§ Sixty students will be added to each of seven Beacon Centers and 80 students will be added to one existing School Age Child Care (SACC) Program.
§ Second through fifth grade students who are at risk of not passing FCAT will be the identified group of students to attend these after-school programs.
§ Students will be served after school and in the summer.
§ Program activities include the following:
o Intensive academics;
o Social and emotional development activities, which include service learning, conflict resolution, and character education;
o Sports, physical fitness, and nutrition;
o Guided recreation; and
o Parent involvement and literacy activities.
§ Collaborative partners in this grant include: the Children’s Services Council, Prime Time Palm Beach County, Children’s Home Society, Housing Partnership of Palm Beach County, Mental Health Association of Palm Beach County, Pleasant City Faith-Based Community Development Initiative, and the Community Child Care Center of Delray Beach.
§ Services will be provided free of charge to participants.
§ An evaluation will be conducted at the end of the school year to measure the impact of the project on FCAT scores, attendance, discipline referrals and pro-social skills.
§ Typically Florida DOE does not approve the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant until August or September, but then makes the effective date retroactive to July 1st.
