Title: Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust Week

Recommendation:
I recommend the School Board of Palm Beach County adopt the proclamation recognizing April 15 - 22, 2007,  as Days of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, and in honor of the survivors, as well as the rescuers and liberators, and further proclaim that we, as citizens of Palm Beach County, Florida, should strive to overcome intolerance and indifference through learning and remembrance.

Description:

The theme of Days of Remembrance is “Children in Crisis: Voices from the Holocaust.”  We honor the late Janusz Korczak, a well-known doctor, author, and nominee for the Nobel Prize.  Mr. Korczak ran the orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto and fought a desperate struggle to maintain dignity among the children who lived there.  The children were deported to Treblinka in 1942, where they were all murdered.  Mr. Korczak believed that every child had the right to soar like a kite.

The fifth grade students at Morikami Elementary School learned about this hero of the Holocaust and through the infusion of science and art made, decorated, and flew kites in his honor.  Samples are hanging in the Fulton-Holland Educational Services Center lobby.

Financial Impact:
None
