Title: G7-Title IV, Safe and Drug-Free Schools (SDFS) Entitlement Project Grant

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve the Safe and Drug-Free Schools (SDFS) Entitlement Project Grant to the Florida Department of Education for up to $898,000, effective July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities.

Description:

The Title IV, Safe and Drug-Free Schools (SDFS) Entitlement Project Grant will continue to carry out the mission of the Prevention Center in the Department of Safe Schools to improve academic and social and emotional learning by reducing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use and reducing incidents of violence in the schools and communities, by providing the prevention and intervention services listed below.

§        Curriculum and training related to the prevention of ATOD usage and the legislatively mandated Character Education instruction

§        Too Good for Drugs science based ATOD prevention program

§         Support, training and review of School Based Teams

§         Alternative to Out of School Suspension Programs for students who violate district policies on ATOD and student misconduct: FACE IT family educational program for students and their parents for violations of ATOD policies and Win Win, a Peace Education program, for students who violate certain student conduct policies

§        Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs awareness presentations

§        Parent to Parent TV programs in collaboration with The Education Network

§        Enhancement of partnerships with community agencies and the continuation of the SDFS Advisory Council

§         Continued promotion of student led initiatives such as SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) and SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)

 

The impact of this project will be measured in the reduction of ATOD and fighting, bullying, and threat/intimidation incidents.

 

A copy of the grant will be available by June 16, 2007 in the Board Mintues Office for your review.

Financial Impact:

The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds Budget is an increase of up to $898,000.  All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue.  There is no financial impact to the Operating Budget.
